DOE's Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management and contractor UCOR have prepared the 210,000-square-foot Beta-1 facility at Y-12 National Security Complex for teardown starting this summer, following the January completion of the 325,000-square-foot Alpha-2 demolition six months ahead of schedule. Beta-1 deactivation involved 900 samples, 17 million gallons of pumped water, 3,000 feet of drainpipe removal, and over 2,500 truckloads of stabilizing concrete, aided by LiDAR mapping. Demolition is set to conclude in 2028, after which crews will move to Y-12's Old Steam Plant.

The Winchester, Illinois school board has awarded Neff-Colvin Inc. of Jacksonville $318,328 to demolish the 1958 grade school gym, closed since January 15 after a bowing structure was deemed unsafe. Crews at the University of South Carolina in Columbia have started tearing down McBryde Quadrangle, a 1955 residence hall that housed 250 male underclassmen for 71 years. The Duluth Seaway Port Authority will rebuild nearly a quarter mile of dock wall and demolish an old grain elevator at 602 Helberg Dr. on Rice's Point, funded by a $27 million federal Port Infrastructure Development Program grant matched with $8.4 million in state and local funds for a $38 million project. Crews began demolishing the sky bridge at Avenida South parking garage in downtown Houston Friday at 7 a.m., per Houston First Corporation. MnDOT will demolish the northbound Highway 218 bridge near Riverland Community College in Austin from 7 p.m. Friday, April 24 to 6 a.m. Monday, April 27, following demolition last weekend on the Highway 218 South/21st Street NE bridge. The southbound bridge closes during the work, then reopens to single-lane traffic in each direction until its own demolition in late June, when crews begin a city sanitary sewer crossing and roundabout construction at the I-90/218 north interchange.
