Georgia Dome's 200,000 tons of concrete became fill for new Atlanta buildings

Crews demolished the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia in 2017 using roughly 240 tons of explosives, then left the resulting 200,000-plus tons of concrete on site as backfill, raising the crater to about 14 feet to match surrounding grade. The Georgia World Congress Center Authority later built three structures atop that fill: the Home Depot Backyard tailgating area, the Orange Deck parking structure with over 600 spaces, and a 976-room convention hotel that opened in January 2024.
