Elkins approves $23,782 bid to demolish condemned 119 Main Street building

Elkins City Council approved a $23,782 demolition contract with Smokey Joe Enterprises for the condemned former doctor's office at 119 Main Street, funded through the Financial Stabilization Account. The bid was the lowest of six received, ranging up to $132,247. City officials described the building as unsafe, citing cut-open walls, debris, and a July stabbing on site. A lien will be placed on the property, though officials do not expect repayment given existing tax debts. Council meets next on Oct. 15.
