Larchmont incinerator demolition to start in October, cost $1.6 million

Demolition of the 88-year-old Larchmont-Mamaroneck incinerator at the Maxwell Avenue Recycling Facility could start as early as October, taking up to five months at a cost of $1.6 million, jointly funded by the Village of Larchmont and Town of Mamaroneck. Town Engineer Robert Wasp says asbestos is confined to the building, not the smokestack, and crews will use water suppression to control particulates, with an independent monitor able to issue stop-work orders. A demolition plan requires approval from both municipal boards, expected next month, while Maxwell Yard operations face a temporary closure with alternate drop-off sites still undetermined.
