Vermont Yankee demolition in Vernon reaches 99 percent complete
Demolition at the former Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon is about 99 percent complete, according to NorthStar Group Services executive chairman Scott State. Roughly 28,000 cubic yards of reactor building concrete went to Waste Control Specialists' Texas disposal site, with another 28,000 cubic yards of local quarry fill used to restore the area. About $8.5 million remains of the $602 million trust fund, with physical decommissioning expected to finish in 2027. Remaining work includes removing the water discharge structure early next year, before NRC review allows any partial site release.
