Winchester, IL school board approves $327,100 to demolish unsafe 1958 gym

The Winchester, Illinois school board has awarded Neff-Colvin Inc. of Jacksonville $318,328 to demolish the 1958 grade school gym, closed since January 15 after a bowing structure was deemed unsafe. General Waste of Alton will handle asbestos abatement, with a $35 per-unit charge for any additional contamination found. Abatement could start early since the area is secluded; demolition is set for the week of June 1. Funding comes from previously issued health life safety bonds and will not affect property taxes.
