Oak Ridge readies Beta-1 teardown at Y-12 after Alpha-2 demolition completed in January

DOE's Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management and contractor UCOR have prepared the 210,000-square-foot Beta-1 facility at Y-12 National Security Complex for teardown starting this summer, following the January completion of the 325,000-square-foot Alpha-2 demolition six months ahead of schedule. Beta-1 deactivation involved 900 samples, 17 million gallons of pumped water, 3,000 feet of drainpipe removal, and over 2,500 truckloads of stabilizing concrete, aided by LiDAR mapping. Demolition is set to conclude in 2028, after which crews will move to Y-12's Old Steam Plant.
