ASHLAND, KENTUCKY – A long-standing landmark in Ashland, KY was taken down on Sunday.

Crews demolished the old AK Steel Coke Plant located at 3801 Winchester Avenue.

It only took a few seconds for controlled explosions to bring down the structures. The plant had provided jobs for families in the region for decades, and many former employees came out to watch the implosion.

“You’re not only seeing the memories and history we had there, but a loss for our community as well,” said Steven Bevis.

Prior to the implosion, all occupied vehicles in parking lots between Winchester Avenue from its intersection with Chatteroi Street and 43rd Street were removed.  Many were excited for the demolition and were hopeful of what was to come.About 100 people lost their jobs when the coke plant closed in 2011.

Crews will continue cleaning up the site until the area is ready for redevelopment.

NCM is the demolition contractor.
